Like many mums, Gill Tucker took time out from a career to raise her children.  But then, once they'd reached school age, she again felt the workplace calling.  And at that stage, she knew it was time for an important career decision.

Gill felt that the industry she left behind had moved on and she was ready to take the leap into a new sector.  But how would she compete with the highly trained people also fighting for those highly coveted jobs?

A mother of two, Gill faced this dilemma a few years ago and decided to take the plunge into a new career by taking a Home Learning College course in book-keeping. She chose home study as it fitted perfectly around her family life. At first, she was nervous about returning to studying and didn't think she would succeed in something so different.  However, her doubts were soon put to one side.

Gill comments: " I was very scared, but it was the best decision I have ever made. It has changed the life of my family and myself in so many positive ways. It has built my confidence and made me feel like I can achieve much more that I ever thought I could."

So impressed was she with the course, that upon completion Gill became a support tutor and began working with Home Learning.  She later progressed to tutor and is now faculty manager, a job she loves and continues to find rewarding every day. Always happy to lend an ear when a student needs advice, Gill believes that being a good listener is one of the most important skills a tutor can possess, along with being patient, supportive and sympathetic to their needs. 

Gill feels she is there to support both the students and other tutors and finds her own background helps her relate to the students and their motivations for doing the course. According to Gill her most used phrase is "If I can do it, then you most certainly can"
